Gani Akinmade, a former student of Tai Solarin College of Education, Ijebu Ode, attempted to swindle one Olubukola Awofeso, a resident of the United Kingdom whom he met on Facebook, of N300, 000.00, the police said Sunday.
Police Public Relations Officer at SFU, Ngozi Isintume-Agu, said the suspect attempted to lure the victim to partner in a business of supplying 300 transformers valued at N1 billion.
The police alleged that between 3 and 22 May, 2013, Mr. Akinmade opened a Facebook account with the name of the Alake of Egbaland and attempted to swindle Mr. Awofeso.
“He confessed to the crime but stated that he conspired with one Seyi Lewis and Ifeanyi to perpetrate the fraud and that it was Seyi that asked him to use his FCMB account number for the fraud,” the police said in a statement.
“It was while he was trying to withdraw the sum of N13,050 sent by a USA victim through Western Union No. FCL9992000 that he was arrested. HRM (His Royal Majesty) Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, stated that he has no Facebook account and has not chatted with Bukola or proposed any business with her,” the statement added.
The police said Investigation was still ongoing and the arrested suspect will be charged to court soonest while effort was on to arrest the fleeing suspects,
“The Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, Tunde Ogunsakin, uses this medium to advise the members of the public to be mindful of the friends they keep on social network. He also wishes to inform them that the Alake of Egbaland, HRM Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has no facebook account and whoever chats or has contact with such name on Facebook does so at his own peril,” said the statement.
