ASUU UPDATE-No Pay No resumption

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will  not  suspend its ongoing strike  until the four months salaries owed its members are paid.
The union also wants the immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the Federal Government to public universities, starting with the release of N100bn this year. The balance of N1.1tn is to be spread over five years from 2014.
These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council of the union who converged on Kano on Friday to deliberate on whether to call off the over four- month-old industrial action or not.
A source, who was privy to the resolutions  reached during the President Goodluck Jonathan – ASUU leadership meeting three weeks ago, told The PUNCH on Sunday,  that  the fresh demands were some of the issues to be tabled before Jonathan by  the leadership  during their next meeting. A date for the meeting is yet to be fixed.
According to the source, a strong commitment to  two demands, among other pending issues, must be obtained from the President before the  industrial action will be called off by the union.
He said, “The issue now is  on trust and we do not want a situation where promises will not be kept. The authorities have failed us in the past and we do not want a repeat of that.
”That was why we decided at the NEC meeting that the government should pay us the arrears of salaries being owed us since we started the strike on July1 before the strike can be called off. The salaries should not be paid piecemeal.
“We also insist that the Federal Government should start the implementation of the offer made to us when we met the President some weeks ago.
“For instance, the N100bn he (Jonathan) agreed to inject into the university system in 2013 should be released to the universities immediately. So, we decided          that before the strike could be called off, these two conditions and others must be met not by promises but by real action.”
The NEC members, who  met behind closed doors  at the Bayero University, Kano, were said to have reviewed the reports of the various university congresses on the strike.
Our  source, who did not want his name in print,  added that the death of a former National President of ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi, was discussed at the NEC meeting.
Iyayi, a University of Benin lecturer, died in an auto accident involving the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada and an ASUU vehicle, on his way to Kano  for  the  meeting. The  union’s National Welfare Officer, Dr. Ngozi Ilo, was injured.
Our source said the  accident “almost led  to the discontinuation of the ongoing negotiation with the Federal Government.
He added, “Some members expressed the belief that he (Iyayi) was killed by the government and therefore argued that the ongoing negotiation should be called off. Tempers rose but some members argued that the President should be respected because he had created the record of being the first Nigerian leader  to  meet with  the leadership of ASUU on the issue of making the nation’s university system better. They also argued that  students and parents should be considered.”
It was also learnt that after arguments for and against, about 60 per cent of the members of the NEC voted in favour of  the discontinuation of the strike  while the  remaining 40 per cent voted no.
But it was gathered that the  NEC members  unanimously agreed that before the strike could be called off, the leadership should ask  the government to pay  the four-month salary arrears being owed university teachers while the offer made by the government should be implemented immediately.
A key component of the agreement reached by both ASUU and the Federal Government when the President led the government team was that government would inject N1.2tn into public universities.
The government also agreed  that the N1.2tn would be domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria to show its commitment to the agreement.
The money is expected to be released on quarterly basis to the universities so that there won’t be any problem about implementing the deal.
The National Universities Commission and the Trade Union Congress will be the joint guarantors of the agreement while the Minister of Education will be the implementing officer. The government also agreed to revamp public universities by ensuring that all the issues that always lead to strike were  dealt with once and for all.
A majority of the chapters of the union had agreed  to  the suspension of the strike following the fresh commitment the leadership of ASUU obtained from the government.
ASUU National President, Dr. Nassir Fagge, did not pick the several calls made to his telephone line by one of  our correspondents on Sunday to confirm the fresh demands.
The  University of Lagos chapter ASUU Chairman, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, and his counterpart in  the Lagos State University, Dr. Adekunle Idris, also  refused to divulge information on the outcome of the NEC meeting.
ASUU had embarked on the strike  to protest against the failure of the government  to implement the agreement they signed   in 2009.
The pact largely centered on better  funding of the universities, a declaration of a state of emergency in tertiary education, better wages  and  payment of earned allowances to lecturers.
It  had suspended the NEC  meeting penultimate week following Iyayi’s death.

PDP alleges APC of importing Voters

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Mr. Makanjuola Ogundipe, has raised the alarm that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state is planning to bring people from the neighbouring states to register as voters in the forthcoming review of voters’ register for the 2014 governorship election.
Ogundipe also alleged that the Dr Kayode Fayemiled APC government has earmarked a huge amount of money for the success of the exercise to ensure fake voters are registered during the poll.
In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Femi Omolusi, the PDP chairman also said that the state government had perfected plans to ensure the removal of the names of civil servants from the voters’ registers, having known their disposition to the ruling party.
Ogundipe, who charged his party members to be vigilant during the registration exercise, urged the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, to take a cue from the efforts of the police during the Anambra State governorship election, which culminated in the arrest of 183 fake election observers and ensure normalcy during the review exercise.
But the state government, while saying there was no iota of truth in the allegations, chided the PDP on the issue, adding that the party was being haunted by its past and its failure to perform in seven and half years in office in addition to wasting the state’s resources.
Information Commissioner, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo and the APC interim state Chairman, Chief Jide Awe, said the PDP was supposed to lay siege and arrest the culprits since it was aware of such plans.
Awe said: “As a party, we have no such plans. If they (PDP) think or are aware that some people have such plan, all they have to do is to guard their loins and report such to the police. I cannot defend what I do not know anything of.”
He said the allegation of plans to import people from outside the state, earmarking funds for the purpose and disenfranchising civil servants levelled by the PDP, were borne out of the opposition party’s envy of the achievements of the APC government.

(CHELSEASPORT) 2-0 is never Enough-MOURINHO

Jose Mourinho was full of praise for midfielders Frank Lampard and Oscar following Chelsea’s 3-0 victory at West Ham.

Lampard, who came into the fixture in his worst goalscoring draught in a decade, opened the scoring after the Brazilian Oscar had been fouled in the penalty area, following a mistake by full-back Guy Demel.

The England veteran would cap the victory late in the second half, and Mourinho dismissed claims that he needed to deliver a performance of this calibre.

"I think he's in a moment where he has nothing to prove, to you, to the fans, to me. He has nothing to prove," spoke the Chelsea boss.

"I was his manager in the best moment of his career, probably, and now I'm back for the final years. He must enjoy what he likes to do, which is enjoy football. Scoring is part of his DNA.

"He played very, very well," Mourinho continued. "Another who was very comfortable on the pitch. He benefited from the protection offered from [John Obi] Mikel. After that, Lamps felt a bit more freedom to find these shooting areas."

Sandwiched between Lampard’s strikes was an impeccable finish from Oscar. Collecting the ball from Hazard, the former Internacional man spun, held off James Collins, before placing the ball past Jaaskelainen with ease, an example, according to Mourinho, that embodies the midfielder’s talent.

"I think the same as you think," Mourinho responded, when asked how well he felt Oscar performed. "In the middle, on the sides, he works hard – he covers – and when he has the ball he's able to score.

"It's not easy to succeed in this country, especially when so fragile, but his talent is amazing."

The Chelsea boss admitted that the second half miss from Maiga proved a crucial moment in the match, insisting that "2-0 is never enough" against sides like West Ham. That said, he felt his side were more than worthy winners.

"The game was good for us, and it became very comfortable," he continued. "We deserved this, we were very comfortable in the game, and everyone in the ground would see it."

Defeat for West Ham prolongs their burden of the worst home record in the league. Speaking after the match, manager Sam Allardyce agreed that Chelsea were deserved winners, albeit having capitalised on his side’s shortcomings.

"We allowed them to be good after the goal. But today is one Chelsea deserved to win," said Allardyce.

"Sadly it was our defence which broke first. When you make a mistake like that, gifted them a goal. It was always difficult from then on.

"We're suffering in front of goal, and now we're suffering defensively. We play with one front man, we don't play with one front man. We play with two front men, we don't play with two front men.

"It doesn't matter what system we play," he continued. "At the minute, we're missing chances."

ARSENAL STRIKER DEDICATES GOAL TO HIS GRANDPA

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud dedicated his two goals against Southampton to his late grandfather, who passed away earlier this week.

The France international opened the scoring by capItalising on a horrendous mistake from Saints' goalkeeper Artur Boruc, before beating the Pole with a well-taken second-half penalty.

After the game he revealed how his  grandfather was the inspiration behind his match-winning performance, which keeps Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

"I wanted to give a thought to my grandfather, who died three days ago," Giroud told Telefoot.

"It was a pleasure to score. I wanted to dedicate the goals to him. It's been a while since I had scored. It feels good, especially as we remain first."

The former Montpellier striker also commented on France's World Cup qualification earlier in the week, as les Bleus overcame a two-goal deficit against Ukraine to book their place at Brazil 2014.

"I've seen guys who had tears in their eyes. A reversal like that, that makes a team whole. It really has the feeling of accomplishment," he added.

"The feeling of having done the good thing and having reconciled with the French people... We were like kids and very proud."

UPDATE! Klug wanted for murder has been found

UPDATE: Columbus Police received notification from the U.S. Marshals Service that Ryan Klug, the man who was wanted in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Adaobi M. Obih has been taken into custody in the  Galveston Texas area.
Authorities had been tracking Klug near Galveston since last night.
Representatives from Columbus Police will be going to Galveston to continue their investigation.
COLUMBUS – Columbus police obtained an arrest warrant for a man wanted for murder.
They’re looking for 36-year-old Ryan Allen Klug, who they say is now the prime suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Adaobi M. Obih, who was found dead Tuesday in an apartment. Police initially said Klug was a “person of interest” in the case.
Columbus police don’t think Klug is still in the area and said multiple law enforcement agencies were looking for him.

Adaobi M. Obih
Police were alerted to Obih’s death after she missed work Monday and Tuesday without notifying anyone. Concerned co-workers contacted her apartment complex to ask about her. Police also contacted the property manager to request a welfare check, according to the arrest affidavit.
A maintenance worked went to check on the woman and said, “It’s not good, there is blood everywhere” after going to Obih’s apartment.
A neighbor said he noticed that the door to Obih’s garage spot was open and had been open for at least 24 hours. Klug, who police described as Obih’s roommate, parked his vehicle there.
The maintenance worker told police there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment and that only two people would’ve had keys: Obih and Klug. The maintenance worker told police he found Obih with a “large amount of blood around her head” and said it appeared clear that she was dead.
Police talked to Obih’s boyfriend, who revealed that he’d texted and called her multiple times but never heard back. The last message he received from her was at 12:17 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. When she failed to respond, he went to her apartment, saw her car in the parking lot and knocked on the door. Obih didn’t answer.
A neighbor who lives in the apartment below Obih’s said it sounded like someone was moving furniture during Sunday afternoon. “It went on for more than three minutes,” the neighbor said, adding that it happened shortly before tornado warnings went off for Sunday’s storms.
Police said Klug had texted a pastor asking him to call. When the pastor did so, Klug answered and said he couldn’t talk at the time.
Further investigation found that Obih had been stabbed multiple times and her throat cut. A blood trail went from the woman’s bedroom to Klug’s, and police said it appeared “the assailant attempted to clean up in the bathroom area belonging to Mr. Klug.” They also found a bloody towel in Klug’s sink. Police located a plastic bag containing a bloody sock and other clothes stained with blood, including blue jeans, boxers and a shirt. Police said the “amount of blood on these items was significant.”
Police found a trail of small blood drops leading from the apartment to the garage where Klug parked his vehicle. His 2008 silver Subaru Legacy was not parked in the garage.
Klug works for the Indiana Department of Transportation, and police contacted his supervisor, who told them Klug’s behavior had been “off” lately. He sent a text message Sunday saying, “sick tomorrow, then vacation next two weeks.” His supervisor said the message was out of character and also violated the department’s vacation time policy. Klug did not return texts or phone calls, his supervisor said. He didn’t show up at work Monday or Tuesday.
Klug’s stepmother and father said they hadn’t heard from him for several days.
His brother told police he’d spoken with Klug about two weeks ago. Klug wanted to get back with a girl he’d dated. The relationship ended about a year ago. His brother told Klug to call her; he said Klug discovered she was dating someone else and told him, “I’m losing control.”
