ASUU: Payment of N200billion is a gimmick

Three days after the federal government announced that it had paid the N200billion university infrastructure renewal fund into an account in the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as demanded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the union is yet to be formally notified of the payment.
Disclosing this on a television programme today, a Professor of Counselling and Psychology at the University of Lagos, Professor Ngozi Osaweren, said as at this morning, the federal government has not deemed it fit to formally communicate the payment of the money to ASUU.
The Professor said she made phone calls to the leadership of the union to find out if the government had officially notified the union of the payment, the reply was negative.
She accused the government of not being sincere, adding that the government should formally communicate the union on the payment of the money, if it was sure.
The university lecturer accused the government of berating ASUU and taking it for granted.
The ASUU President Dr. Nasir Fagge-Issa had in an interview asked the government to formally communicate to the union that the money had been paid in the CBN as demanded by the union. He predicated the suspension of the strike on government replying a letter written by ASUU to government on 25 November.
Also commenting on the issue, the Secretary of ASUU in Lagos State University, Comrade Adeyemi Suenu, described the purported payment as a gimmick, adding that government is just buying time by trying to paint the lecturers as the problem of the universities.
“The whole payment of N200 billion into CBN account is all gimmicks which the government has not been able to prove with a documented evidence.”
“If the government paid to CBN account, it should release the account number for the populace to see. Moreover, why should two parties be involved in an agreement and one party goes ahead to fulfil its part without the knowledge of the other,” he asked.
The Secretary said it is very important for Nigerians to understand this present government and the way it builds up sentiments without doing its responsibilities.
“We need to understand this government of deceit, they threatened to sack us if we don’t resume on the 4 December. Now it has been postponed to  9th of this month, one thing is certain, if FG does not fulfil its part of the agreement in the right and acceptable manner, ASUU will not betray the educational sector by calling off the strike without achieving anything.
“We have committed more than enough to this struggle to be cowed by sentiments, our position remains that government fulfil its part of the deal,” he declared.
Chairman, University of Lagos Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, has accused the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, of incompetence in the handling of the Ministry.
Ogbinaka, in a chat with PMNEWS, in Lagos, western Nigeria, blamed the protracted industrial disputes by federal and state-owned universities on Wike’s inability to resolve the issues. The Philosophy lecturer flayed the Education Minister for leaking a letter by ASUU leadership on its demands to President Goodluck Jonathan to the press, without the latter seeing it first.
“We sent letter to the government through Wike and instead of forwarding the letter to the President, he leaked it to the press and started making all types of comments he could make in this world. We found in Wike somebody who talks and reasons later,” he said. Short of calling Mr. Wike’s action a blackmail, Ogbinaka said he misinformed the public that ASUU had made fresh demands as conditions for stopping the strike.
“I doubt if Wike has the patience to even read the documents presented to him and that is what has landed us in the situation we are in. If it was not for him, the ASUU strike was as good as resolved. Wike is clearly incapable by every standard,” Ogbinaka stated.
The ASUU chieftain faulted Wike’s retention in the Ministry of Education after the sack of Professor Rukayyat Rufa’i Akali, former Minister of Education.
He frowned at President Jonathan’s choice of Wike. “We understand what led to the removal of the former education minister, Professor Rukayyat Rufa’i and, if in a football match, the referee sacks your goalkeeper, what a reasonable coach would do is to sacrifice a player to bring in another goalkeeper. I think the President should have reshuffled his cabinet the moment key ministers were removed, but unfortunately he left Wike as supervising Minister of Education,” Ogbinaka said.
Meanwhile, Senior Presidential aide, Doyin Okupe, Wednesday, in Abuja, confirmed to journalists the proof of deposit of N200 billion into a designated Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN account. Okupe named the special account as “Revitalization of Universities Infrastructure Account,” with reference number FD/OAGF/220/ADC/1/4DF, while modalities on its proportional disbursements to the institutions were being worked out.
However, ASUU said it has not been officially notified.
But Ogbinaka assured that ASUU had resolved to call a National Executive Council, NEC, meeting to annul the strike once the government met its demands.

FG to Mobilize NANS against ASUU

According to dailyindependent, the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike might be taking extreme measures to disorganize the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
Read the full Report below and tell us what you think;
The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, a strong ally of President Goodluck Jonathan has made a drastic move to tear the ranks of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, apart using the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President. Impeccable sources, including student leaders in the body and Presidents of the Student Union Government (SUG) squealed to us that current NANS National President, Yinka Gbadebo popularly called Ayefele was given a huge sum of N30 million to distribute to student leaders across the country to help mobilize students against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to discredit the ongoing strike.
We gathered that the said Yinka sent a text message to all the SUG Presidents and Senate Presidents last night to converge in Abuja today for an ‘interactive session’ with Wike.
Some SUG presidents, who spoke to us, noted that they will not honor an invitation of a tout and known cultist, having shown so by the names he called during the Rivers State House of Assembly saga.
When asked what the agenda will be, a source noted that it will be all about asking for their opinions on how to join the Federal Government in embarrassing ASUU, as well as redeeming the shame that will befall the FG tomorrow should ASUU stick to the strike.
We also gathered that the N30 million was rejected by some student leaders who told Yinka to take the money back to the Minister, but he insisted on sharing the money daring them to do their worst.
The outcome of the meeting is not yet known as at the time of filing in this report.”

ASUU STIKE UPDATE:FG presents proof of N200bil Deposit

The Federal Government yesterday presented proof of deposit into the coffers of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, of the contentious N200 billion meant for the funding of the universities as demanded by the ASUU.
The government also said that having fulfilled its own side of the bargain, it expected ASUU to keep to its own promise and call off the strike.
In a press conference in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said that it was necessary for the government to proof to Nigerians that following the presidential intervention on the ongoing strike by the lecturers, President Goodluck Jonathan instructed the fulfillment of the agreement with ASUU.
Okupe said: “On November 13, 2013, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation authorised the banking and payment system department of the Central Bank of Nigeria via a letter with reference number FD/OAGF/220/ ADC/1/4DF to open a ‘revitalisation of Universities Infrastructural Account’ with the CBN.
“On November 29, 2013, the CBN confirmed in a letter reference BPSD/BSD/ CON VOL 17/088 to the Accountant- General of the Federation that the said account had been opened and an account number was given.
“Prior to all this, the Director of Funds in the Office of the Accountant- General of the Federation through a letter reference FD/LP2008/37/C/I/DF dated November 8, communicated with the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission requesting for the list of federal universities in Nigeria for the purpose of opening a special account for them.
“On November 12, 2013, the NUC through the Office of the Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, in a letter reference NUC/ES/444/ VOL15/280 responded to the request and gave the list of the universities with their various account numbers domiciled with the CBN.”
He said that following this development, the accountant- general had communicated with the executive secretary, requesting for the details of amount payable to each of the listed universities currently being processed by the NUC.
“I state categorically that I have personally seen the balance in the account as of today and confirm that it contains the requisite amount and disbursement will commence as soon as ongoing administrative processes are sorted out.
“Distinguished gentlemen, we want to reaffirm that the President and this administration have no credibility issues whatsoever. Mr. President has always honoured his words and obligations to the Nigerian people as and at when due.”
Okupe said that given due considerations to the four items mentioned by ASUU as preconditions to their calling off the strike, the Federal Government stated that none of them remained weighty enough to justify the continuation of the strike.
“Therefore, there are no further legitimate reasons for the strike by university teachers to continue a day any longer.
“We, therefore, call on Dr. Nasir Fagge, his distinguished colleagues in the ASUU leadership and other patriotic members of their union to put all else aside and call off this strike in the interest of our young men and women who have been kept out of school for five months and who have no recourse to any form of compensation whatsoever.
“Having come this far, we believe it is time that we all come together once again as major stakeholders in the affairs of the country and the educational sector in particular to move on and begin to chart a new course for advancing the sector and improving the standard of our institutions for higher learning. There are no victor or vanquished in this protracted disagreement.”

Oprah Winfrey-I refused to get Naked

Oprah Winfrey, one of the most powerful women in the world, declared she would not be stripping off her lingerie to get ‘buck naked’ on screen.
The billionaire TV tsarina and occasional actress was speaking to me about her role in director Lee Daniels’s movie The Butler, in which she plays Gloria, wife of a White House butler played by Forest Whitaker.
Gloria becomes bored with her middle-class life while her husband’s off looking after ‘that other family in the White House’.
Oprah said that after a while Gloria starts to drink, and fools around with a neighbour, played by Terrence Howard.
She said Daniels would have preferred her to go much further during her scenes with Howard. ‘You know, he would have had me buck naked on that sofa if I had let him!’
She added that she and Daniels argued ferociously about how Gloria would behave. ‘He did more screaming than I did — I’m not a screamer,’ she said.
She insisted it would make no sense for Gloria to go to bed with Howard. ‘If she’s going to roll around in bed in the middle of the afternoon,’ she explained, then it would be ‘a lie, a fake thing’.
The infuriating fact about Oprah Winfrey is that she has a day job that takes her away from acting.
It’s 15 years since she did Beloved; and 27 years since The Color Purple.
She provides the heat in The Butler in more ways than one.
Not only does she look terrific, but she nails the character completely: she’s a force of nature on screen.
The movie spans several decades, and I wondered aloud whether America has paid that promissory note to African-Americans that Martin Luther King talked about in his I Have A Dream speech.
Oprah believes it has. ‘I think that every day, each of us is allowed to be judged by the content of their character,’ she said.
Forest Whittaker and Oprah Winfrey, with director Lee Daniels (right), during a photocall for their new film The Butler, at the Corinthia Hotel in London

She also noted how much African-Americans have accomplished since King’s oration. Once upon a time, she said, they had to sit at the back of the bus. ‘Now we could buy the bus.’
Oprah observed that five decades ago: ‘I would not have been allowed to be Oprah Winfrey. “How dare I!” I certainly wouldn’t have been allowed to have owned my own television network,’ she laughed, delighted by her own audacity, her gold bangles jangling.
I risk a joke, asking if she is allowed to buy handbags now — a reference to the infamous episode in Zurich where an assistant in a posh store didn’t let her see an expensive bag, because she didn’t think she could afford it.
‘I don’t think I’m going to have a problem buying a handbag in London,’ she said, matter-of-factly.
And then she hitched up her Donna Karan ensemble, and helped me retrieve my tape recorder, which had been strategically placed next to her Yves St Laurent-shod feet.
Oprah has people at her offices and her various homes to pick up after her, so I was flattered that she could be bothered to do some light lifting for me.

SHOCK-I-N-G! Paul Walker was burnt alive

The L.A County Coroners Office have revealed how Paul walker died. They say he was mortally wounded in the crash on Saturday November 30th, but was still alive. According to the report, he was burned alive. And the only way they could positively identify him was through dental records. This is such a horrible way to die. It's also been revealed that his friend was driving 90mph in a 15mph zone

From TMZ
Paul did not die from the impact of the crash alone. He burned to death after the Porsche GT crashed into a tree and a pole and exploded into flames.
The man who was driving the Porsche GT, Roger Rodas, died from multiple traumatic injuries suffered upon impact. Burning was not listed as a factor in his death.
Sources in the coroner's office say both men were positively ID'd by using dental records.
See the first photos of Paul's longtime girlfriend since the accident.

This is the first time Paul's longtime girlfriend 23-year-old Jasmine Pilchard- Gosnell has been photographed since he died in a car accident. Paul and Jasmine began dating in 2006. She broke down as she arrived at his home in Santa Barbara.

ALL CATHOLICS WILL GO TO HELL-Chris Okotie

This is according to PMNews. Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate, Chris Okotie, told his congregation last Sunday, that: ''All Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil,'' - Fifty-five year old Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Ikeja area of Lagos, said the Catholic church is “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics“bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.” Okotie told a stunned congregation: They are not Christians and have never been. They don’t know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual. The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times,”He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan. He advised members of his church to come to the rescue of Catholics and evangelise them. This, he said, was not out of disrespect but out of respect for the word of God. He said those who know the truth should bring it to those who do not know it in the Catholic Church. Okotie said one of the Catholic most revered Popes, Pope John Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic Church to Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, instead of Jesus himself. He said even the current Pope Francis has also done same. He said Catholics are not Christians and do not worship the same Christ that he preaches in his church, at least the one spoken about in the Bible. Okotie said he did not write the Bible but it was clear to him that those in the Catholic church were lost and were heading to hell fire. “They don’t believe in heaven. They believe in purgatory, the purgatory that they invented,” Okotie said. “That church, the Catholic church has been there for Satan and at the right time, they will declare for Satan,”Okotie said. Okotie who has been married twice and divorced also twice said a beauty pageant will take place in his church next Sunday to select the most beautiful woman in his church. He also said his yearly “Grace programme” where he makes donations to charity organisations will also take place next Sunday. The once rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician has been controversial for years. He once said it was the devil who told him for the first time that he was going to be a preacher. He also said Nigeria’s famous preacher Prophet T.B. Joshua is the son of the devil and his followers will go straight to hell. In recent years, he has been saying that God has anointed him to be Nigeria’s president. That prophecy has not come to pass in two presidential elections that he participated in. I just hope he will try his luck AGAIN in 2015

The gunmen, said to be over 300, attacked with heavy artillery including Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers.

Several people were killed by the explosives which the terrorist planted in targeted areas, including the newly constructed trailer park along Damaturu- Maiduguri road, military check points, residential and public buildings. Some Boko Haram members and securities operatives were killed in the attack.

The attack this morning has prompted a 24-hour curfew in the city. Only vehicles on emergency calls and essential services are allowed to move for now.

INCREDIBLE!!! Governor Oshiomole apologised to The WIDOW

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Monday met with the the widow he insulted in a major road in the state while on an inspection tour, If you miss that read it HERE and donated two million naira to her, after an apology:
"Let me apologise to you for the way I spoke to you, I am very sorry about the statement. I have also realised that even in anger, one could still achieve the same result that he set out to without provocative outburst. I apologise from the bottom of my heart."
The widow, Mrs Joy Ifije, who was invited to the Edo Government House by the governor, was also offered automatic employment by Governor Oshiomhole to take her off the street. She was so happy...

Oshiomhole had invited the widow to personally apologise to her over his uncomplimentary remark which had generated controversies in both the conventional and social media in since last week.

Oshiomhole's action has frustrated the PDP in Edo State that were trying to play politics with the matter.

The governor used the opportunity to advise against risking their lives to trade on high ways. He said trading on the road and walk ways could hinder free flow of traffic as well as cause accidents.

He added that his government will continue to change the face of the state with infrastructural development.

On her part, the widow, Mrs Joy Ifije, pleaded with the governor to forgive her for flaunting the law of the state and promised to do better next time. She said: "I know I was wrong, that was why I quickly knelt down to beg when I realised I was face to face with the Governor."

Funny enough, the widow promised to help government advise other women not to trade on the road side
As at now I can say that Mr Oshiomole is  the most humble Governor Nigeria has ever had.
Congrats to Mrs Joy Ifije

ASUU tells PARENTS:- Don’t risk the lives of your children and wards. Keep them at home

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday  advised   parents  not to endanger the lives of their children and wards by sending  them to their  university campuses.
ASUU which also  told  its members not to sign attendance registers in their institutions, lashed out at the Federal Government for lack of consistency in its statements on  the ongoing strike.
The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, had  at a news conference in Abuja  on Thursday,  warned that any ASUU member that failed to resume on or before Wednesday would be sacked.
Wike  also directed vice-chancellors to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions.
He  told the vice-chancellors to open attendance registers for lecturers that resumed in   their universities.
The Federal Government  then  directed the  Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to deploy policemen in all  the federal universities.
On Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan, who   described the strike by the university teachers  as a “subversive action,” added that ASUU had ceased to be a trade union.
But the  Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Dr. Segun Ajiboye,  said parents should keep their children and wards at home  as no academic activity would resume until the five-month-old strike was called off.
Ajiboye added, “Don’t risk the lives of your children and wards. Keep them  at home because ASUU will not teach. Soldiers and the police deployed by the Federal Government  will not teach.    Wike can come and teach in the universities. It is a huge joke to sack lecturers. Our strike must not be in vain. Our students must see the results.
“It is funny. We thought we are in a democracy. I assure Nigerians that we know what the law says about the strike. Our job is statue backed. We are not threatened. “We do not trust the government. The record of the government is clear. This government is dishonouring agreements. Our members are resolved to pursue this to a logical conclusion.”
Ajiboye also said that the Federal Government’s stance was from a script that was played out by the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida in the 1990s.
He stated, “Dear members, stay calm and remain resolute. There is nothing wrong in asking government to do what it says it will do immediately. ASUU is not making any new demands as the supervising minister is propagating. Government is only repeating a ‘one act play’ scripted by the IBB dictatorship in early 90s. It didn’t work then, and, it won’t work now. All branches are intact. We cannot be intimidated.
“If ASUU could withstand Babangida, this government cannot  threaten us. We have worked this road before, the only thing that will work is peaceful resolution. It is sad that government wants to sack us because we are asking for the resolutions. We are ready to be sacked but government should learn from the University of Ilorin experience. We are going to stay the course.”
ASUU President, Dr.  Nassir Fagge, urged  university teachers  on Sunday   not to sign any attendance register.
Fagge,   in a message to the UI chapter  ,  urged the lecturers to be  resolute in their demands despite the threat of insecurity to their jobs.
He  said, “Comrades, can you see the unfolding drama? Now Jonathan says they didn’t give ultimatum. That the vice -chancellors did and Wike  became their trumpet. But NUC’s (National Universities Commission) ultimatum is by the  Federal Government to us to resume or get sacked.
“Wike’s  press address says ‘FG has directed’ not ‘VCs have directed.’  Be calm, stay resolute. By God’s grace, we are on course.”
The  Chairman, University of Lagos chapter  of the union, Dr. Karol Ogbinaka, said Jonathan’s description of   the strike  as  a “subversive action,”  was unfortunate.
“How can our action   be subversive when we do not have arms and ammunition? We take exception to that. We are academics not coup plotters. I have a feeling he was misquoted. I wish to deny this on his behalf because it is an extreme statement,” Ogbinaka said.
He  also faulted the buck passing on the directive to reopen universities, saying it pointed to the fact that the  government was “somersaulting.”
According to him, the Federal Government is  now shifting the blame among the pro-chancellors, Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Wike.
But the Presidency on Sunday insisted that those behind the strike were  enemies of the  state.
It said this could be the reason why the ASUU leadership refused to call off the strike even when 42 out of its 61 chapters voted against  its  continuation.
The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated these at a  news conference  in Abuja on Sunday.
He wondered why the leadership of the union also refused to call off   the strike even after its 13-hour   meeting with the President.
Okupe described the strike as an evil programme motivated by selfish political interest.
He said, “The ASUU leadership refused to accede to the wishes of 42 of its 61 chapters nationwide, who voted in favour of the agreement with the President and the calling off of the strike; but in a surprise volte face presented government again with a new set of demands and considerations outside the terms agreed at the presidential intervention.
“From all indications therefore and other information available to government, it has become obvious that this is no longer an altruistic strike borne out of good intentions and aimed at improving the welfare of students and staff of the universities and the standard of our educational institutions.
“Rather it is an evil programme motivated by selfish political interests and motivations within the polity. These are, quoting late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, ‘the enemies of state operating from within’”.
While Okupe was talking tough in Abuja, the   All Progressives Congress slammed the government for issuing  the sack threat against the university teachers.
In a statement in Lagos, the APC   said the resort to military  tactics reflected government’s poverty of ideas in resolving the prolonged   strike.
The   statement   by the party’s  Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,  also criticised Wike for the way he talked down on the striking teachers, while issuing the  threat.
APC stated, ‘’Wike’s language was crude, his presentation was rude and his threat was demeaning and counter-productive. We believe his lack of finesse and the inability to think out of the box in handling the whole strike issue will not bode well for a quick resolution of the crisis.”
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress  will on Monday(today) meet with the ASUU leadership  as part of its  efforts to resolve the crisis between the union and the Federal Government.

(sport) Liverpool is ready to Secure Moses Now

Liverpool are keen on securing a permanent deal for Chelsea winger Victor Moses, reports The Metro.
The Reds took the 22-year-old on loan from the Blues in the past transfer window and, despite the Nigerian star in-and-out of the team at Anfield, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to keep him for the long term.
It’s thought the Merseyside outfit will have to pay their Premier League rivals £7m for his long term services.
Moses however, will be looking for more opportunities at the Anfield outfit before he decides to leave Chelsea for good.
The winger struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge and with Jose Mourinho in charge at Chelsea, it’s unlikely he will get many opportunities in the future.
And with Liverpool ready to keep him at the club, Moses may now see his long term future on Merseyside, if he is given more opportunities to shine.

ALAAFIN confered honorary Chieftaincy on Gov Yuguda

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on Saturday, advocated the adoption of the historic Oyo Empire as a model for the development of a strong and prosperous Nigeria.
Adeyemi made the call in Oyo during the conferment of honorary chieftaincy titles on Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State and his wives.
According to the monarch, the Oyo example is a model in empire building which can still be adopted by Nigeria in its efforts at state and nation building.
“I expect that the Presidential Advisory Committee on the National Conference will find time to understudy how Oyo became a prosperous empire and sustained its leadership over a long period,’’ he said.
The traditional ruler said that the crises rocking Nigeria had assumed a frightening dimension, threatening its corporate existence.
“The national question has thus far remained unresolved, one hundred years after amalgamation, making calls for a sovereign national conference strident,’’ he added.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the monarch conferred on Yuguda, the title of Obasayero of Oyo Empire, while his wives, Aisha, Abiodun, Mariya and Nafisa bagged various tittles.
Adeyemi said that the honour done to the Yuguda family was in line with the ancient tradition of the old Oyo empire‘s building of bridges across different cultural and ethnic divides.
Yuguda, in his acceptance speech, described the action as a clear testimony of Alaafin”s true and genuine disposition to the unity of Nigeria.
He pledged loyalty to the monarch, promising that he would not hesitate to give constructive and honest advice at the appropriate time.
Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mrs Monsurat Sunmonu, and a former Governor of the old Oyo State, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.
